It makes sense to build your online business about something you are passionate about and has demand in the wider community. We are looking to start something we love, right? Something that’s exciting enough that we bound out of bed each day filled with the enthusiasm to tackle whatever comes our way. If you are passionate about your subject then your enthusiasm and positivity will shine through and attract your target market.

Do your market research and Identify gaps in the market place, understand your audience and validate the demand. This will guide you towards an opportunity that resonates with both you and your future customers. It will help you to combine what you love with what your customer truly needs.

If you’re ready to change your career, opt for a dream life and dive into the online business world then finding your niche is key.

STEP 2 – CREATE A BUSINESS PLAN

It’s easy to get passionate about your idea and just dive right in! BUT, if you want to build something that is sustainable, and will give you the opportunity to quit your current job, change your life and do what you love, then you absolutely NEED a business plan.

a business plan for an online business

Creating a business plan when you are setting up an online business is vital, especially if you are changing careers and stepping into something new. The solid plan is your ROADMAP, which will help you clarify your goals, define your niche and outline the steps you need to take to reach your dream life.

Having a business plan will also keep you focused and organised along your journey. It will guide you to ensuring you’ve considered the important topics like your target audience, your marketing strategy and your financials. For anyone looking for the joy and freedom of being their own boss, a business plan gives you the confidence and structure to direct you on your chosen path. It transforms your idea from a vague and fluid concept to a real and actionable strategy that will give you lasting success.

STEP 3 – SET UP YOUR ONLINE PRESENCE

Setting up a strong online presence is vital to creating a successful online business. Especially when it comes to a business that’s sustainable and is going to create the life you want for as long as you want.

What are the main steps to achieving this?

1) Start by defining your brand.

  • Who are you? – get your customers to relate to you. They will buy from you if they trust you.
  • What are you offering? – what products or services are you offering?
  • How can you help your audience? – what can your customer get from you that will help them to resolve their current dilemma?

2) Create a simple but professional website that showcases your products or services. Allow your website to reflect your brand and promote your message. Aim for consistency – it’s crucial! Make it easy for visitors to connect with you and understand your offering.

3) Build social media profiles on sites where your ideal customers spend their time. Share valuable content that will engage with them and will help to build a rapport with them so they begin to trust you and buy from you.

And don’t forget that consistency! Keep your messaging, visuals and tone aligned across ALL of your platforms. It’s your brand…and it needs to be recognisable.

4) Optimise your website for SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) so that you rank higher in searches. How do you do this? Use relevant keywords, write helpful and engaging content and ensure that your site is fast and above all mobile-friendly.

STEP 4 – CHOSE THE RIGHT BUSINESS MODEL

There are several different types of business models that you can chose from when starting an online business. Each has its own unique benefits and challenges and which one you chose will depend on your strengths, interests and the lifestyle you want to create.

Take time to consider whether you want an e-commerce store, a service based business where you offer your expertise as a consultant or coach, a seller of digital products, a provider of a membership or subscription service, or an affiliate marketer where you promote other people’s products.

STEP 5 – MARKET, MANAGE AND SCALE

The final step…..

Once you’ve successfully mastered Steps 1-4 you’re now onto Marketing, Managing and Scaling your business to ensure it’s ongoing and long-term success. I mean you want that new lifestyle you dream about to have longevity, and that means creating a business that’s sustainable.

How?!

Start by building the authentic brand that connects with your ideal customer. Use social media, email marketing and great content to engage and attract your customers. Don’t forget to be consistent and focus on your experience and journey in your story-telling so it resonates with your ideal customer.

Managing your business requires setting clear goals, staying organised and automating tasks where you can to save you valuable time. As you grow, outsource where you can (know your skills and limitations), reinvest in tools to increase efficiency and save time, and most importantly listen to customer feedback.

Scaling is all about expanding your reach. You can do this by offering new products, collaborating with others whether in your chosen field or a field aligned with yours, or by growing your audience. The key is to stay ADAPTABLE, and build a business that evolves with your vision.

Well, so far so good! It all sounds pretty do-able, right? And to be honest, IT IS! But, as professional women most of us wouldn’t start something so life-changing without considering the pros and cons.

SO, WHAT ARE THE PROS AND CONS OF STARTING AN ONLINE BUSINESS?

In all honesty, I considered all of them at the start of my own journey. BUT, I decided that to get the dream life I wanted I needed to step outside my comfy world. Sometimes, things that are worth achieving need effort. As a quick summary, here’s the ones I thought to be the most important.

So, let’s consider the pros

1) For me #1 has to be the flexibility and work-life balance

I honestly wanted a dream life where I could work from wherever I needed, set my own schedule and be free to help look after my grand-children as and when needed. It’s this flexibility that helps me to control my work-life integration and gives me the work-life balance I was desperately missing.

2) A lower financial risk

Online businesses typically have lower start-up costs than businesses that require a bricks-and-mortar type establishment. No need for an office, no need for a shop. With the advent of e-commerce platforms such as Shopify, Fiverr and Etsy you can create your business with much less capital. In fact, you can often start it part-time whilst maintaining your main income source (the day job!) and gradually transition up to being totally your own boss.

3) Digital skills development

Learning new digital skills will play a large part in your new online business. Whilst the thought may seem daunting at first, if you align yourself with a support platform that can help you build your dream business then the new skills will help you to keep you mind sharp (no mental decline if you’re honing and learning new skills!) and will also help you to stay current in today’s ever evolving digital world.

4) Scalability

Creating an online business has huge scalability. Not just the people who happen to walk past your shop on a Saturday (if you’re in the bricks and mortar world of selling) but the whole world-wide online community! You really do have the potential to reach a global audience.

5) Passive income potential

Depending on the business model you chose, your new online business can give you the potential to earn income whilst you sleep! Affiliate marketing models can do just this. You post your ad and then people will see it, connect with it and purchase it literally 24/7. You don’t need to be present and behind a counter to earn a living. You could be sat on the beach, sipping a cocktail and topping up your tan whilst your business works for you.

What about the cons?

1) Steep technology learning curve

Depending on your background and skills you may need to invest time in learning new digital tools and platforms. I had this learning curve to overcome, but you know what?, with the business plan you create and the support of the learning platform you choose you can pace yourself to learn and grow at your own speed.

2) High competition and market saturation

Depending on your chosen market many online markets are highly competitive. The key is to stand out and find a niche that you can clearly define and has the potential for significant marketing investment. Be Different.

3) Requires self-discipline and consistent effort

There’s no doubt about it, setting up an online business needs a heck of effort. Sure, at first you are juggling the family, the day job and trying to build your dream business in between. There’s no boss to push you – just you. BUT, think of the longer term gains….your DREAM LIFE. It’s these thoughts and remembering why I started this in the first place that keeps me going in those moments of self-doubt.

4) Unstable income at first

It’s true, building an online business rarely happens overnight, especially if you want it to be sustainable and have longevity. Building a stable income stream takes time and commitment. It’s not a fast win. Plus, just because it’s online doesn’t mean it comes for free. You will need to consider some start-up costs and paid ads if you want to achieve good customer reach plus sign-ups for subscriptions to certain platforms and online tools.

5) Work-life boundary management

Having your own business, working from home, working when you like….it all sounds a dream, right? Depending on your mind-set, some people find it difficult to separate their business and professional life when they are home all the time. If you manage yourself wisely, and learn as you go, this needn’t be a problem at all. It’s all about achieving the work-life balance.

So, in conclusion?

Whilst starting an online business can be life-changing, it’s not always an overnight success story. It requires dedication, learning and adaptability. If you’re willing to put in the work, stay patient and keep at it, the rewards are definitely worth it.

Imagine your life with time freedom, financial independence and personal fulfillment.

Doesn’t it sound worth the initial hard work and commitment for a lifetime of living your DREAM LIFE?
